Writing: 5 - 7 - 10 | My Favourite Cultural Celebration

Today for writing, our challenge was to write a 5 - 7 - 10 story based on our favourite cultural celebration. 5 - 7 - 10 is a writing challenge were you write as much as can for 5 minutes, talk to a friend for 7 minutes, and finish off in 10 minutes. For my story, I chose to write about Christmas. You can read the text I wrote below to see the points I go over, and a few extra details.

5 - 7 - 10 | My Favourite Cultural Celebration (Christmas)

Let me tell you about my favourite cultural celebration, Christmas. Christmas is a well respected holiday between my brother Latham and I. This is because on Christmas Eve, we can barely sleep!

My average Christmas starts off by waking up, and running to my brother’s room. I would ask for the time, and if it was at least 6:00 AM we could get ready. Then we would go to our parent’s room, ask if we could open presents, rush to the table, grab our Christmas sacks, run back to our parent’s room, and let the fun begin. In our family, presents were not wrapped. Instead we could grab anything from our Christmas sacks, and put it in a pile. We would then usually hear, “Aww yes!” or “Oh uh, thank you!” Then we would hug our parents, and thank them for the presents they got us.

Although that’s only the beginning. The next step for Christmas consists of us getting dressed, and getting ready overall. This is because later in the day we will be going to my grandma and grandpa’s house in Pakuranga, Auckland, along with everyone else in the family. Once we say hello to everyone, we would usually tell our cousins what we got. We would all hang out for a little while, until my grandma would bring out the food. This is usually buns, with chicken or ham and a plate of vegetables. Along with a few snacks, and hot cross buns.

After my dad eats all of the food like a garbage disposal, my cousins, my brother and I usually get a soccer ball, and play for a while. This then brings our day to an end. Christmas is my favourite cultural celebration, as I love spending time with my family, but most importantly I like it for the presents. This year, the date for Christmas is the 25 of December, 2019, and I cannot wait!

Writing: 5 - 7 - 10 Animation

For the last two weeks in writing, we have been granted a challenge by our teacher Miss Kirkpatrick. The challenge was straight forward, and everyone knew how they would execute the outcome. Our challenge was to use one of the stories that we had written for our 5 - 7 - 10 tasks, and animate it. If you have not seen one of our 5 - 7 - 10's, then allow me to explain how they work. Once everyone has completed the task for the week, we are shown an image with a heading based on our image. Next we would time 5 minutes to write as much as we could for this story. Once time ran out, we would then spend 7 minutes reading and explaining our stories to a partner. Now the 10 minutes would begin, and we would have to continue of from where we left the story off, and have it completed in time. That is basically it. It was the animation side of it that made this a big challenge. So we all got working. The 5 - 7 - 10 story that I had chosen to re-create with pictures was The Eye. The image was a snakes eye, and a short description including a story starter that we would later use. I chose this story, as I immediately came up with an idea to display through animation. I started with a dark swamp, along with an eerie vibe to it. Later, making my description more lively. I had a lot of fun doing this activity, and I hope that we can do it again at some point of time.

Writing: 5 - 7 - 10 Writing | Week 8 | The Tunnel

This week for writing, we were asked to write a description for our 5 - 7 - 10 Writing. 5 - 7 - 10 Writing is when you write as much as you possibly can for 5 minutes. Then you would talk about your story to a friend, and read your story to them. You would do this for 7 minutes. Finally, you would edit, and complete your story in 10 minutes, and have it shown to your teacher. Although unlike last times 5 - 7 - 10 writing, we were to write a setting description, rather than a character description. Our subject of this weeks 5 - 7 - 10 was The Tunnel. Which showed a picture of a tunnel  formed by trees in a forest. This was an awesome subject to write about, giving me the perfect opportunity to add in a lot of words that I would never use of a daily bases. Using words like perambulate, rather than walk. This let me write and an epic setting description about the tunnel.

Picture:

The Tunnel

I see the dark, oak wood trees surround me. There are bushes, expanding around the
trees, and stumps of the forest foreground. The trees curling around the corner of a large
rock, blocking my perspective of the sun. The rough edges of the rock, smoothing the
closer I get. The grass swirling around each tree, growing longer and longer, by the
second. Broken branches then start to heal, growing faster than a cheetah running across
a long, blank, grassy field. “This is a mysterious place,” I say to myself. I then see the
trees arc into a circular formation, forming a tunnel for me to stride through. The tunnel
advanced for a very long time, as if the tail of the tunnel was getting smaller and smaller.
The tunnel then goes dark, as a silence fills the forest. Then the tunnel suddenly brightens
up, and there is a visible door at the very end, with nothing to provide information for
what may be on the other side.

Writing: 5 - 7 - 10 Writing | The Greatest Library In History

This week for writing, we again did 5 - 7 - 10 writing. 5 minutes to write as much as you can, 7 minutes to talk about your story to a partners, and 10 minutes to edit, and finish the story. Although, to add a twist to it, we needed to use this time to write a character description. We were given a set prompt, and today's prompt, was about the greatest library. I loved this prompt, because it sparked my imagination, and let me write an awesome story.

The Greatest Library In History

Melissa sets foot into the library, that she had heard great comments about, from her
friends. She lives just across the street from this library, and has wanted to go. The only
thing that was restricting her from going, was that she could only go with her mum or dad,
who both work 24/7. Although, today Melissa’s mum got the day off, and agreed to take
her for half an hour.

Melissa grabs a book, and flicks across the pages as her imagination kicks in. She looks
back at the pages, and reads: The beautiful princess stumbles across a small cottage, and
meets Gumbo, the gumball. Melissa looks back up from the pages, and sees a purple
gumball, waving his hand.

Melissa turns her head, to see a lolly path, leading to a chocolate fountain. She says
goodbye to Gumbo, and skips her way to heaven, only to hear her mum call her name.

Melissa then closes the book, and this magical wonderland, then transforms back into the
library. “Thank you for taking me to the library mum, it was the best day ever.” Melissa
exclaimed.
