Reading: QAR Questions

L.I: to use a range of comprehension strategies to go deeper into a text

This week for reading, we answered people QAR questions about the three texts that we read. Although, there was a problem. For last weeks activity, you needed to create your questions with a partner, and for that week, we only had 4 people. So Mr Ogilvie kindly came up with some questions for us to answer. I was working with Alex for this activity, and we both knew Mr Ogilvie's tricks, and we were right. Mr Ogilvie had purposely made his questions not make sense, so that we would be more confused. Alex and I had to now think of the answers very carefully. When I'd posted this blogpost Mr Ogilvie hadn't given us the answers, so while writing this post, I don't know what our score is.

How do you look after your well being? Are they similar to Roger?

• Jack: I make sure to eat healthy, and drink lots of water, but I do still treat myself every once in awhile. What I do is similar to what Roger does, although he doesn’t like fast food and I do.
• Alex: I drink a lot, eat a lot and exercise everyday. What I do similar to Roger is he makes sure that his body always gets its nutrients.

What does Roger consider well being?

• Jack: Yes, because you encourage one-another, and the game sounds like a good source of exercise.
• Alex: Yes, because I like running around, and this game includes a lot of it.
• Author and you (Because you have to read the text, and read the rules to this game).

Do you think Roger is balanced with his Hauora?

• Yes | Author and you

Do you think sports stars could do more to promote being healthy?

• Jack: I think they could do a little bit more to promote it.
• Alex: No | On my own

How did Rogers Family support him?

• His family gave up their lives in New Zealand and moved to Australia just to support him. | Right there (Because the answer’s only in one spot)

What percentage of water is your body made up of?

• The human body is 73% water, but in the text it says that it’s actually 70% | On my own (Because you can ask anyone the question even though an answer is in the text)

Reading: Questioning And Predicting

This week for reading we learnt about questioning and predicting by making posters with the rest of our group. We made in total three posters, one about what questioning is, the other about what predicting is, and finally our own version of the QAR template. Each poster had to explain what points we were making, and deeper information on how to question, predict, and figure out what the type of questions you are wondering.

The Duel: Story Web / QAR

This week as work for reading, we read a story called The Duel. Before we read the story we had to try to predict what the story was about, by looking at the title, cover and pictures. Once we read the story, we would then use the Story Web template to explain what the story was about, and use the QAR template to make questions about the story.

QAR: My Mother And Stan

For reading this week, we had to read a story called My Mother And Stan. We would make a prediction on what the story was about, by looking at the pictures and the cover. We then had to do a quick QAR quiz, by reading a short story to practice what Right There questions are, what Think and Search questions are, what Author and You questions are, and what On My Own questions are. We then had to read the story again, and make our own QAR quiz about My Mother And Stan. Finally, we would publish it on our blog and wait for another person in our group to try and answer our questions.
