Summer Learning Journey: Day 5 : Week 1 | Activity 1

Today I completed the first activity to day 5 of the first week of the Summer Learning Journey. For this activity, we had to pick a side on the issue with logging. Logging is the act of chopping down trees as a career. We had to decide whether we thought logging should be stopped or not, and why.

I don't think that logging should be stopped, but rather limited. Many trees are cut down year after year, and although it's an issue, it goes to a good cause. As it can support homes for people, be used in different structures, and facilities. Although I feel that logging has been taken to an extreme length, and that if less trees are cut down, the better New Zealand could be.

  1. Good afternoon Jack,

Thank you for sharing your honest opinion on whether logging should be allowed in NZ or not. I think it is really important that you suggested to put a limit to the issue rather than completely putting a stop to it. It is undeniable that wood provides us useful resources such as building material and paper.

Have you thought of any alternatives to slow down the process of deforestation? I was thinking that it would be a great idea to plant as many trees as we are cutting them down. Have you ever heard about the One Billion Trees Programme? The government has set a goal to plant one billion trees by 2028. Programmes like this would help us make a difference in starting to shift the world.

I recently came across an article that talks about this programme. They have encountered an issue where no one is willing to take the job of planting trees. It's a very sad story and I thought it might be worth sharing with you. Have a read through the article when you have time:

Looking forward to reading more of your blog posts Jack,
    Susie

  2. Hi Jack,
Great job on completing this activity! I liked how you said that you don't think logging should be stopped, instead it should be limited. Although that's already what happens, maybe lowering the limit a bit more would slowly help the environment. Do you think we should lower the limit?

  3. Greetings Jack,
Well done for completing another task on the Summer Learning Journey. I hope you enjoyed your summer break. I really enjoyed reading your blog posts. I really respect your opinion. My opinion was they should stop logging because it is making a mess. I also like how you wrote why you should like logging to keep happening.

How would you feel if they stopped logging?

    Joshua

  4. Hello Jack! Smart choice, I agree that logging should be limited as well. It's helpful material but can damage the environment so loggers should be aware of how much they should be logging. What should you think be the limit? Keep it up!
