Reading: Duck Overboard Summary

L.I: to look for keywords and phrases
L.I: to identify the main ideas in a text

This week for reading, we had to summarise an article about the ducks that were washed to shore after a storm that hit a cargo ship. We had to skim and scan through the text, write down what the 5 W's and the H (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How) is for this text, and then make a short 25 word summary about what the article was explaining.

Summarising the Main Idea

Good readers notice key words.  Here are some clues to help you find key words:
  • Key words are directly connected to the topic
  • Key words are often repeated in the title and the text
  • A key word helps you to remember an important idea
Use this table to help you summarise the main ideas in a text in your own words.  It is important that you use your own words to show your understanding and to avoid plagiarism.  If you don’t know what some words mean, look them up.

Keywords from the title
Duck
Overboard

Keywords from sub headings
Duck
Overboard
New words I need to look up
Stupendous

Read the text and record key words/phrases that answer these questions:

What?
Storm washed 3 containers.
Where?
In the ocean.
When?
January 1992.
Who?
Curtis Ebbesmeyer.
Why?
To help with charting ocean currents.
How?
A storm & ocean currents pushing the ducks around the world.

Now using the words you wrote down summarise the text in 25 words or less.

A storm washed containers of ducks into the ocean on January 1992. The ocean washed up ducks to different places, and helped chart ocean currents.

Great job on this! I really like how you said that we had to write down the five W's and the H because it makes it easier with imagining what happened and where it happened. Was it easy to answer the questions? And also did it take long for you to cut your summary down to twenty five words?
    Great work!
