Reading: Raz Kids

Today I read a Raz Kids story. In the end I accomplished to get all my questions correct.

Inquiry: T Chart + Small Activities

L.I: Identify actions and factors that can prevent a team from working.

For the next two weeks of inquiry, our focus is what makes a good team. The activity for today was to make a T Chart, that shows what make a good team, and what makes a bad team. Each side needed 10 examples, and we needed to rate what would be most effective, to what wouldn't be as effective. For the good team column, we needed to rate them from 1 - 5, two for each rating. For the bad team column, we needed to rate them from - 5   -   -1, two for each rating. After this quick activity, we started to have some fun (Not that we weren't having fun in the first place). We played 2 and a half games, I say 2 and a half, because the last game we didn't completely finish. Our games we played were, Silly bones (Run around, when a number, and body part is called, get into a group of that number, and connect that body part),  Cars (Get a partner, one person doesn't move without instructions, other person taps their partners shoulder to tell them where to go. Try not to make your partner crash into a wall, or other person), and our last activity was a game where you get into a circle, get an omnikin ball (Omnikin balls are very big balls filled with air), and try to get the ball moving around the circle with your legs only.

Writing: Words About Persuading

L.I: What is Persuasion
L.I: to show what we already know about the purpose and language of advertising.
This week for writing, we've been learning about persuasive writing. Our activity was to make a word art image, that included words that relate to persuading. Here is my word art, I've included 20 words, and decided the image was the shape, and colour of a brain (Because when you persuade someone, that someone needs to think about it).

KiwiCan: Emotions Activities

Today we had KiwiCan with Mr Malu. Our focus for this term is about emotions. An activity we did was were we have to get a partner, choose who would be a creator, and then get into a circle. The creator had to make their partner into a statue, depending on the emotion. If we were told e.g happy, then the creator had to move their partners body into that emotion. The second activity we did was musical emotions. You would get into a group, and each group was given an emotion. The groups would pretend that they were in a band, and each group had to guess their emotion. The emotions we were given were, sad, crazy, angry, and heartbroken.

Maths: 3D Shapes Activity

LI: To learn about three dimensional shapes’ names and their properties.

This week for maths, we did an activity about shapes. We had to take images of shapes, and measure their sizes with different strategies. We had to label things about the shapes, and connect those labels to where they are on the shape.

Reading: Ducks Overboard Activity

L.I: To identify the main ideas in a text

This week for reading, we had to do an activity about the event that occurred a few years ago, Duck Overboard. Duck Overboard is about a cargo ship that was hit by a storm, causing a container of thousands of rubber ducks falling into the ocean. We had to watch a video, read a text, and read a news report about the ducks, and then put the information into a main idea summary frame (A Main Idea Summary Frame Is What Is Under This Text).

Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjxLIMF2Fq0
Text Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16rRNMzjF0CYzuNgl3z_4oQ9FacEGD8qe8o_85NVJGP8/edit
News Report Link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-464768/Thousands-rubber-ducks-land-British-shores-15-year-journey.html

Text title: Duck Overboard
Author: (There are many different authors of the videos and texts about the Ducks Overboard experience).
I think the main idea of this text / video is how all the rubber ducks travelled around the world.
One example of a supporting detail is that different ducks went in different directions, with ones taking longer to make it close to land.
Another example of a supporting detail is that the ducks came from a cargo ship that was hit by a storm, resulting in many rubber ducks falling into the ocean going many different ways.
It is clear that the main idea is about the thousands of rubber ducks that came from a cargo ship several years ago,

Because that is what made people research about them, and write about their travels. Many popular news articles have included this catastrophic, but yet very interesting event to their newspapers.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 7 | BONUS ACTIVITY + What I Have Learnt

Throughout this week I've had a lot of fun learning about New Zealand, and especially loved sharing what I did on my blog. Each day of learning I had so much fun and did so many exiting activities and challenges. This could not have been possible if Rachel (The creator of this activity) decided not to start this awesome program. Commenting was just as much of fun knowing I can see how people have done what I have also, but differently.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 7 | Activity 2

For the second activity of day 7 for the Winter Learning Journey, we had to take an photo of our self relaxing. What I took a photo of was me lying down on a mattress resting from all the work I had previously done.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 7 | Activity 1

For the first activity of day 7 for the Winter Learning Journey, we had to come up with three ways we could make our neighbourhood clean.

1.  Put your rubbish in the correct bins. (Rubbish Bin, Recycling Bin).

2. Pick things up from the ground instead of leaving them there.

3. Do what you can to grow other plants for more existing life around you.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 6 | BONUS ACTIVITY

For the day 6 bonus activity for the Winter Learning Journey, we watched 3 videos of the All Blacks doing the haka. We had to watch all three, and rate them by the best - worst. I've put them in order of what I rate them.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 6 | Activity 2

For the second activity of day 6 for the Winter Learning Journey, we learnt about the Matariki Festival. We had to find 3 events happening, and write them down on our blogs.

Event 1: Matariki Survey To Win 100 Dollars.

Event 2: Watch The Maori Haka For 2017.

Event 3: Watch Te Papa's first Matariki Ritual

Winter Learning Journey: Day 6 | Activity 1

For the first activity of day 6 for the Winter Learning Journey, we learnt about the first waka that came to New Zealand. We had a challenge to write a poem about what we would feel if we were on that waka, and what you would see.

My Poem: We are travelling travelling travelling travelling travelling across the water.
I think i'm scared I think i'm scared, or maybe by just a quarter.
There are hills and pits rivers and spits and many many mountains.
There are a lot of things here, and I might just need to count them.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 5 | BONUS ACTIVITY

For day fives bonus activity for the Winter Learning Journey, we were asked a question whether we would ever want to ride across the Otago Rail Trail one day. Once we say whether we would or wouldn't, we have to say why / why not.

My Answer: I would like to ride across the Otago Rail Trail one day.
Reason: It's a good exercise, and gets me out of the house doing something physical.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 5 | Activity 2

For the second activity of day 5 for the Winter Learning Journey, our activity was to research a famous New Zealander. We had to write their name, where they were born, why they're famous, and two facts about them.

Wednesday 12 July 2017

Winter Learning Journey: Day 5 | Activity 1

For the first activity of day 5 for the Winter Learning Journey, we had to pretend that we got lost in a New Zealand Forest. We have to write 8-10 sentences at least about what we would feel, think.

I've just lost my group in a mysterious forest, and I don't know what to do. I don't know whether someone in my group will notice i'm gone very soon. There are bugs and animals everywhere, and I think I've had about 4 of them crawl up my back. I can hear lots of birds chirping from the trees above, but I think there's something else up there peering down at my existence. It's getting darker and I really hope someone will eventually find me. It's now 7:37 PM and I'm getting really scared that I'll stay lost for the next DAY! I need to find shelter sooner or later otherwise I'll get too cold. I think someone is near, I've been shouting at them and they're coming towards me. I hope it's my group.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 4 | BONUS ACTIVITY

For the bonus activity of day 4 for the Winter Learning Journey, we had to make our opinion whether we think fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned. I think it shouldn't unless people are using nets, killing fish without eating them, and only catching about 12 a month maximum.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 4 | Activity 2

For the second activity of day 4 for the Winter Learning Journey, we had to watch the two trailers for the old Maori movie Whale Rider. We had to write a small description about the movie, and then rate it our of five.

Description: It's about a girl named Paikea whose brother who was supposed to be the next chief of a Maori tribe dies at birth. Only men are allowed to be chief of their Maori tribe. Paikea doesn't agree and wants to win over her grandfather Rawiri Paratene.

My Rating: I give this movie a 4 out of 5 and would some day want to watch it.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 4 | Activity 1

For the first activity of day 4 for the Winter Learning Journey, I learnt about the recent whales that were beached (Swam to the shore and got stuck). Our activity was to visit a site that talked about what happened, and on our blogs we had to describe what people did and saw.

People could see so many whales all across the shore, birds all around them, and many people trying to save them. It's said it was "like a grave yard with 300 dead whales". A lot of the whales were bleeding, and running out of water to keep them from becoming dead. People tried to save them by poring water over them and their blowholes.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 3 | Activity 2

For the second activity of day three for the Winter Learning Journey, we had to make a blog-post about we agree that we should kill all pests, and give at least three reasons why.

Do I Agree On This? Answer: Yes, I do, but not completely.

Reason 1: Pests kill a lot of endangered animals up to extinction.

Reason 2: Pests are very dangerous things, they don't only attack animals or other small things, but also can attack us.

Reason 3: They do more than just kill small things, they can do other things too that do not help.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 3 | Activity 1

For the first activity of day 3 for the Winter Learning Journey, we had to pretend that we adopted an animal from This Place, and write on our blogs about them. I chose a brown kiwi, and here are some facts about them.

Eats: insects, worms, spiders, grubs and berries.

Lives: North Island of New Zealand.

Females are lager than males.

Predators: Cats, Dogs, Possums, Hedgehogs, Rodents, Weasels.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 2 | BONUS ACTIVITY

For the bonus activity for day 2 of the Winter Learning Journey, I had to pretend I was interveiwing a family member of mine about what they enjoy doing out-doors. We had to list five of them and put them on our blogs. I interviewed my cousin, and these are the things she enjoys doing.
  1.  Climbing trees
  2.  Sunbathing
  3.  Scooting
  4.  Reading
  5.  Walking

Winter Learning Journey: Day 2 | Activity 2

For the second activity of day 2 for the Winter Learning Journey, I learnt about a girl named Laura Dekker who sailed around the entire world. So what I was told to do for this activity was to think of 5 question I would ask if I could meet Laura Dekker. There was a video we could watch about Laura Dekker, but I decided to have fun and do the activity with no information about her except for what she did.

Question 1: What risks came from you sailing around the entire world?

Question 2: Did you have any way to communicate to other people?

Question 3: How long did this trip take?

Question 4: What food and drink did you have on your boat?

Question 5: Were you sick when you finished your trip?

Winter Learning Journey: Day 2 | Activity 1

For the first activity of day 2 for the Winter Learning Journey, I had to pretend I went to the three places, Rangitoto, Kareka Beach, and Tane Mahuta. I had to write down what my favourite places were (As if I really went there) and the reason why.

My most favourite place: My favourite place I pretended to visit was Rangitoto. The reason why was because I had then just found out that Rangitoto emerged from the sea 600 years ago, and is the youngest volcano!

My second most favourite place: My second most favourite place I pretended to visit was Tane Mahuta. The reason why was because it is the place of the oldest kauri tree.

My third most favourite place: My third most favourite place I pretended to visit was Kareka Beach. The reason why was because filmmakers like Jane Champion, Barry Barclay and Niki Caro have set major films there.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 1 | BONUS ACTIVTY

For day 1 of the Winter Learning Journey, my bonus activity was to make my own New Zealand flag. This was done because of the time when John Key attempted to change our New Zealand flag. I made my flag with google drawing and found an image of a silver fern so I can get a reference and I did the same with a picture of New Zealand.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 1 | Activity 2

For the second activity of day 1 of the Winter Learning Journey, we had to watch a video that talks about Auckland. We then had to think of our top 5 favourite facts, and list them.

Fact 1: Auckland has the most boats per capita in the world!

Fact 2: Rangitoto can be seen from all around the city.

Fact 3: No matter where you go in Auckland there will always be water near.

Fact 4: Maori ancestors sailed here about a 1000 years ago.

Fact 5: Near the Waitakere Ranges is Piha

The facts above are from the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qldi00zUxA

Winter Leaning Journey: Day 1 | Activity 1

Today for the Winter Learning Journey my first activity was to find three facts about New Zealand, and write them down in our own words.

Fact 1: 14.6% of New Zealand's population are Maori, that's 14.6% out of 4.4 MILLION people!

Fact 2: Before the atom was split in the earlier times of the 20th century, a lot of inventions had been created by Maori people in their backyards!

Fact 3: Because there is a lot of water around New Zealand, it is found that over 15% of New Zealand families own a boat.

The information that has been written above is by the website: http://www.newzealand.com/us/feature/new-zealand-people/

Maths: Measuring Weight

L.I: to measure the weight of a person with a scale.

This week for maths we learnt a bit about measuring weight. So what we did as an activity was to measure each person in Mr Wongs maths groups by weight, and put them all on a spread-sheet. We then got into groups of 4, and had to do these challenges. The first challenge was to simply add four peoples weights together to see what they together weigh. The second challenge was to find the weight of a gorilla, and add peoples weights together to the closest you could get to a gorillas weight. The third challenge was to find the weight of a Boeing 737, and combine weights to get as close to the Boeing's weight as possible . The last challenge was to think of 2 things, find the weight of them, and add people together to make that weight.

Writing: Written And Illustrated Narrative

L.I: To proofread and edit
L.I: to Illustrate the narrative

This week for writing we had to both illustrate our narrative, and make a front a back cover. We have already spend the last few weeks preparing and writing this story, and this week was by far the funnest of writing our stories. We needed to illustrate each paragraph of our story, and had to make sure you could tell what was going on. Below is my story that I both wrote, and illustrated.

Blurb The Swampness Monster

Chapter 1: Blurb Will Rise
BOOM!! Jack’s body exploded by the toxic slime. Jill and Bailey both started to shoot, as Jill’s bullets sling through the slime that reconnects together each time. Jill knows what she needs to do…
1 Day Earlier
‘Jack!’ Feebee exclaimed, ‘Yeah mum?’ Jack replied. ‘Can you go to the market and use these Rendals to buy some milk and bread darling?’ Feebee questioned. ‘Sure!’ Jack replied. He raced towards his mother, took the tiny copper coins from her hand and started to walk to the local markets. Screenshot 2017-06-29 at 2.12.34 PM.pngHe looked back and waved goodbye to his mum Feebee looking through the glass window. As Jack walked through the market gates, he could smell the butchers fresh meat, with the perfect amount of salt and seasoning. Jack strolled down the pathway, greeting his fellow friends he sees selling items for Rendals.

Jack walked to the dairy section and bought a 1.5 litre container of milk, and a half loaf of bread. While Jack walked back to the gates he saw a stand he’d never seen before. The weaponry stand! Screenshot 2017-06-29 at 2.29.43 PM.pngHe walked towards the stand and asked the old man standing there where he’d come from. This man had no name, his mum and dad divorced before he was born. He was set up for adoption, but no one adopted him. The old man replied to Jack, with his deep soft voice, ‘Would you like to buy a weapon, or give your weapon to me for repair?’ Jack answered ‘No thank you, but if my sister’s gun gets damaged, I’ll tell her about you.’ The old man was silent for a second. He later said, ‘Tomorrow night on Halloween, Blurb The Swampness Monster will rise from his swamp, beware if you dare to go trick or treating, or your body Blurb The Swampness Monster will be eating.’ ‘He’s a giant blob of slime that leaves a trail, his slime resembles the goo from a snail.’ Jack didn’t know what to say, he just said goodbye to the old man and walked back to his cottage.

Chapter 2: Slime Hunters
Jack walks through the door and gives the change to his mum, as well as the bread and milk. He rushes to inform his sister Jill what he was told. ‘SIS... COME HERE, I HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL YOU!’ ‘What?’ Jill replied. Jack told her ‘So I went to the market today to get some bread and milk, and there’s a new man with a weaponry stand that told me tomorrow night on halloween, this Blurb slime monster thingy will come from his swamp!’ ‘Really?’ Jill questioned. ‘Yeah, can you believe it!’ Jack answered. So Jill came up with the idea to look for Blurb tomorrow night after trick or treating, and to bring her gun, and super powered dog Bailey. Bailey is a small brown dog, with three eyes, his left eye is thermal vision, his right eye is night vision, and his third, middle eye is his laser eye that shoots out a blue laser. Jill learns magic at a place in the middle of the woods.
Narrative Illistration.png

The next day, 12 hours before the hunt for Blurb, Jack went to the markets again to get some costumes. He found the costume he had been eying down for the last couple of days, a super gory zombie costume, and the perfect costume for Jill. A cop costume, mainly because her gun wouldn’t scare a person from them thinking it’s real. Screenshot 2017-07-03 at 9.32.25 AM.pngHe rushed through the market gate, and had a quick glance at the weaponry stand. It was empty, but Jack remembered he had to get home fast. So he turned back and ran home, but the thought on why the old man had left stayed in Jack’s head. Once he made it home he gave the cop costume to Jill and explained why he didn’t prank her and get a princess costume instead. The hours passed quickly taking away the time Jack and Jill had to rest and prepare. They put their costumes on, and Jill grabbed the lead to chuck on Bailey so he doesn’t run away. Jack, Jill, and Bailey then walked out the front door, and said goodbye to Feebee and Jeffy, their parents. ‘Stay safe out there!’ Jeffy exclaimed.

Chapter 3: Trick Or Treat Blurb You Will Meet
Jack, Jill and Bailey walk around the street, to find the perfect house. Jill picks up Bailey and put her hand over his third, to try not to freak anyone out. They wandered up to a house, and knocked on the door. ‘Trick or treat!’ Jack and Jill shouted. A young lady opened the door and replied, ‘Hmm… do a trick for me.’ Jill came up with the idea to lift her hand from Bailey’s head to scare her. Jill did so, and the lady thought it was just a fake eye attached to him. So Jill tickled Bailey under his stomach, which every time makes Bailey shoot a small laser. Jack laughed to himself for what was about to happen. Jill pointed Bailey up just in time before he shot a laser through the lady’s house. ZAP!! went the laser. Screenshot 2017-07-04 at 9.27.48 AM.pngSLAM!! The lady shut her door even faster than the laser made it past earth’s atmosphere. Jack and Jill walked away from the house, laughing the hardest they’d ever before. Doooooong!! The grandfather clocks struck twelve in each home simultaneously. Jack and Jill decided to now look for Blurb, before it would be too late.

They ran to the local swamp, and Bailey used his thermal vision to find Blurb. There was nothing there. ‘WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!’ Jack shouted. ‘DAMMIT WE GOT LIED TO, making me stay up to 12 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT!’ Screenshot 2017-07-04 at 9.33.46 AM.png‘WAIT!’ Jill exclaimed. ‘LOOK! There’s a trail of blue slime.’ Jack remembered ‘He’s a giant blob of slime that leaves a trail, his slime resembles... the goo from a snail...goo from a snail?’ THUMP!! ‘Uhhhhhhmmmmm … is it just me or did Bailey do a super sonic FART?! Jill questioned, ‘UMMMMMMMM … WHAT … IS … THAT?!’ Jill saw a huge blue slime trail.

Chapter 4: The Chase Begins
They turned around and saw what they reckoned was Blurb. ‘Stay very very still Jack.’ Jill whispered. A HUGE blue blob of slime stood in front of Jack, Jill and Bailey. They backed away very slowly, hoping that Blurb wouldn’t notice. ‘RUEAAAAAAAH!!’ Blurb shouted. Screenshot 2017-07-04 at 9.39.40 AM.png‘Ummmm, I think this means we run.’ Jill said. Jack replied, ‘Yeah, I agree.’ Jill picked up Bailey, tickled his stomach SO MUCH, that he fired a HUGE laser. It zapped through Blurb completely, disintegrating him into millions of pieces. Jack Jill and Bailey stood victoriously, thinking that was it. It was not, the leftover pieces of Blurb merged together making him bigger, and stronger. The only choice Jack, Jill and Bailey now had was to run.

They ran all the way home, and hid in their basement. Feebee and Jeffy weren’t home though, because they went to watch a movie. Blurb slid under the basement door and screeched at them as loud as a squawking bird. Screenshot 2017-07-03 at 10.14.59 AM.pngRight as Blurb slid under the door, he  ate Jack, leaving him to drown in toxic slime. BOOM!! Jack’s body exploded by the toxic slime. Jill and Bailey both started to shoot, as Jill’s bullets sling through the slime that reconnects together each time. Jill knows what she needs to do… she learnt a spell that can both stun something, and switch souls. She rushed to get her wand she left on the couch in the lounge, and broke through the the basement door. She came in to Bailey shooting his lasers at Blurb.

Chapter 5: A Hero’s Magical Words
This was Jill’s chance, ‘Stun this monster, leave him to be tired, return my brother’s body together, and switch their souls like broken wires.’ These words did exactly what they say. Out of Jill’s magic wand came a laser that stunned Blurb, you could see Jack’s body joining back together, and finally, the souls switched. BANG!! Blurb’s body exploded once again.Screenshot 2017-07-04 at 9.18.28 AM.png ‘JACK!?’ Jill shouted, ‘YOU’RE ALIVE!’ Jill rushed up to give Jack a MASSIVE hug. ‘Well that’s definitely the last time we go trick or treating for a while.’ Jack stated. ‘Oh yeah, that reminds me, how’d your gun hold up during that?’ Jack questioned. Jill pulled her gun out of her pocket, releasing the trigger snapped. ‘Awww, snap. The trigger’s broken.’ Jill said. Jack replied, ‘I know how you can get it fixed.’ ‘How?’ Jill questioned, and so Jack explained that the old man at the market owned a weaponry stand. Jack and Jill told the old man what they had just experienced as he fixed Jill’s gun. ‘Ya know what, for your bravery and passion to save your brother, I’ll repair your gun for free.’
